In Tanistry, your voters look at your chosen successor, blink, say, "that's nice", and then vote for your imbecile Uncle Fred, and there's nothing you can do about it. Tanistry is best for keeping your realm in one piece, it just means you may have to assassinate kin members who are more popular than your preferred heir. If you want to get to feudal quickly focus on upgrading tribal authority to max quickly (no negative effect because your not a pagan), and build up your hill fort to max (raiding is the best way to make money quickly).

If the chosen successor is not one of the ruler's sons, all of the ruler's sons will be considered junior heirs. In addition, Elective Gavelkind has several unique features for junior heirs: Tanistry is elective Gavelkind where enstead of random vassals, your family inheirits. Its good to keep it in the family, but bad if you want a long reign with good traits.
Use tanistry, if I could i'd use it for every game. You're likely to not get the heir you want picked, but you get your pick of the litter if you don't like the current heir. For tanistry (or elective), I have no idea how any why voters choose a specific heir. I even wondered about going republic, but that seems hardcoded to agnatic and completely bugs out if I try to become a republic as a woman.
